Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Why The Show Should Return To The Classic Format

3. There Are Plenty Of Villains We Could Still Revive

Quarks Doctor Who Will people really remember the likes of the Gelth, Hath, Carrionites and all the other one-shot villains as fondly as those of a certain age who go all misty-eyed at the Dominators/Quarks? I thought not €“ it's all about potential. Were any of those brilliant later monsters given the opportunity of a canonical TV comeback, as well as the other classics alluded to but not seen since their maiden outings (Drahvins, Chumbleys etc), so much more magic could be made? People moan about the old 'monster of the week' format, but if these were given more time €“ however short €“ to challenge the hegemony of the Daleks and Cybermen who seem to bestride the pantheon above lesser but nonetheless recurring enemies both classic and new (the Ood being just one example, like their cousins the Sensorites- what if the two species met?) we could be sitting on an even richer universe to delve into. Sure, these less well-known villains occasionally get a wash and brush-up for the audios, but the Moff of the Land of Fiction doesn't count that, so the answer's simple €“ revitalise them. Oh and also, don't be afraid to have a little goofy fun with the older/ lesser loved toys in the box, Steven €“ not every trip across time & space has to end in heartbreaking revelation!
