Doctor Who: 10 Steps To Falling In Love With Peter Capaldi
8. In The Flesh
It is perhaps to Peter Capaldis detriment that his first real stint in the TARDIS was after such an emotional farewell from Matt Smiths beloved cosmic hobo. The audience were asked to go from heart wrenching lines from the pen of Steven Moffat to kidneys, Ive got new kidneys. I dont like the colour. It was jarring and a little unsettling, especially when it was clear he had no idea how to fly the TARDIS. In truth, this is not much different to David Tenants hmm, new teeth or even Matts legs, Ive still got legs but with such a high level of anticipation, leaving the audience for several months with a Doctor who didnt seem to know his way around his own time machine, was confusing and a little bit of a let-down. The original version was supposedly much longer with Peter jumping around and showing lots of energy. It may have been wiser to show this longer version of the scene and give the audience a little more time to get to know him. As it was, the lasting impression during the off months was of a questioning concern. Is this the Doctor we thought we were getting? Will he live up to the hype? In that brief moment some of the audience went from unconditional love to qualified disquiet.
I.T. Consultant, technophile and Doctor Who fan. I like to talk about tech, take films apart and make excuses for Doctor Who's continuity errors. No other show has the power to make me feel like a big kid.
