Leaving Clara to fend for herself becomes showing her respect and not assuming she constantly needs help or guidance. His being wrong and fallible makes him more human while his alien enthralment with all things new lets the audience rediscover things they thought they already knew. Clara€™s acceptance of the new Doctor for who he is may come a little later than for the audience, but once it did, the dynamic between them becomes far more even footed than ever before. By the time Flatline came along endearment has started to give way to genuine affection. It might not be the same as when we loved Matt Smith, but no two loves are ever the same.
