Doctor Who: 10 Things Series 8 Must Do To Be The Best Yet

8. Make An Effort To Address Criticism

Doctor Who, like any large entity, has a lot of critics. Some are more thoughtful, some less, but all of them have very strong options on what is going right or wrong in the Whoniverse. Most concerning are the critics who grapple with issues of demographics, like race, gender, and age. The amount and gravity of their criticism has continued to escalate and it is troubling. There are others who feel the objections are too harsh or too numerous, who cry that everyone's gone mad with political correctness for making a suggestion that they feel €œdestroys the integrity of Doctor Who€. It is beyond the scope of this article to advocate for any individual change, but most can agree that casting, plot and dialogue decisions are required to improve the diversity and multicultural sensitivity of the programme overall. Even if you are among those who vehemently disagree with the vast majority of this discourse, having unhappy critics with concerns makes the fandom a less happy place offscreen. Regardless of whether the production team disagrees with the changes proposed by critics, it will be important to the success of series eight for them to continue to be aware of what is being said. Both what comes across on our television screens as well as comments made behind the scenes will be judged by how they respond to these concerns.
