Doctor Who: 11 Previous Stories That The Peter Capaldi Era Should Learn From

9. The Monster Of Peladon

Once upon a time there was a story called The Curse of Peladon, and it was resoundingly awesome on just about every level. Then two years later they remembered that that story had been awesome and went back to do a sequel. The sequel was... less awesome. In fact, I think 'not awesome at all' is the phrase I'm looking for here. Alan Bennion does his by-this-point stellar job at portraying a distinctly different version of the character that we still have never officially called an 'Ice Lord', but beyond that it's six episodes of someone shouting, 'Hey! Remember how cool Curse of Peladon was? Remember that?' Which is sad, because just by existing The Monster of Peladon makes Curse somehow less cool than it used to be. It's a rare example of Doctor Who falling into the trap of thinking that just because something had worked before, that was reason enough to do it again without putting in any additional effort. Basically, know when to let go and move on to new stories.
