Doctor Who: 15 Most Disastrous Stories Of All-Time

4. Underworld

I watched 'Underworld' and simply couldn't follow it, mainly because it is incredibly boring. So I read the story breakdown, which is also incredibly boring. I can only deduce therefore that Underworld is incredibly boring. I suppose the most obvious problem here is the production values are dreadful. The story is mostly shot against Blue/Green screen, because there wasn't any money to build more than a handful of sets. This leaves this story with some of the worst special effects in Doctor Who history. The script couldn't fill its allotted run time. Some shots are repeated to pad out the story, other scenes are contrived to fit around not so much the plot but the run time. Rather than save a comrade immediately they just wait until the writer says they can do something. It's like they know they're in a bad television programme. The actors, including the regulars also seem to be bored stiff too, just like the audience, waiting for it to end. A personal complaint relates to the inspiring chant the Minyans have; 'The quest is the quest'. What does that even mean? Is it some kind of existential philosophy? That is like saying an apple is an apple. Of course it is! It's an apple! That is by far the dumbest thing about this script and it's repeated about a thousand times. It was considered scrapping the story altogether and allotting the budget to, 'The Invasion of Time', but this was ultimately rejected.
