Doctor Who: 15 Most Tear-Jerking Moments

3. "One Day, I Shall Come Back..."

Goodbyes are always difficult but the first big farewell of Doctor Who was one that would go on to become one of the most iconic moments in the show's history. As the Doctor says goodbye to his granddaughter Susan, it appears that the show is turning a corner; this is the end of Chapter One, and though William Hartnell doesn't show much emotion in his portrayal of the Time Lord, he gives us some languishing looks as he delivers his famous speech. "One day, I shall come back... yes. I shall come back," he begins, mirroring his words from 'An Unearthly Child'. "Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties," he continues. "Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine." It's a strong and self-assured goodbye, but it's so reminiscent of a parent telling a child that this is for the best; it's not only extremely relatable though, it's brilliantly delivered, fantastically well-written, and it comes at a great time for the show. It's perhaps accidental that it's quite as moving as it is, but it's still one of the loveliest moments in the Doctor Who's long history.
