Doctor Who: 15 Most Tear-Jerking Moments

2. Doomsday

A controversial pick quite so high up this list €“ the world either loves or hates Rose Tyler €“ but 'Doomsday' is certainly one of the most heartbreaking Doctor Who episodes in the show's history. The final goodbye is wonderfully executed. The title track by Murray Gold is wistful and melancholic, as the Doctor and Rose simply long for each other either side of a wall; what follows is one of the most excruciatingly cheerless scenes in television. Ten and Rose's conversation mirrors one of their first, as he can't bring himself to tell her that he'll be alone now. She cries even more, and tries to console him by telling her she loves him. But before he can reply, he disappears. The connection wouldn't last that long; the Doctor's left crying in the TARDIS. Regardless of whatever you think of Rose, the scene is undeniably sad from an objective point of view. We might not love her unconditionally, but the Doctor clearly does; this is a man that has just lost the girl who helped him get over the Time War, and on top of losing his best friend, he's racked with more guilt of not telling her how he feels, and not being able to give her a proper goodbye. He may be a godly being, and it may be totally unDoctorly for him to have a relationship with a human being, but that's just what the Time War did to him. When he lost Rose, it was the worst day of his life since activating the Moment.
