Doctor Who: 15 Most Tear-Jerking Moments

1. Vincent And The Doctor

Rather than picking 'Doomsday' as the saddest moment of Doctor Who, let's talk about an episode that has almost unanimously uniting the Who community in lavish praise for the show, and writer Richard Curtis. So often, we hear of the burden that the Doctor carries; he's the last of the Time Lords with a responsibility to obey the laws of time and space. The final moments of 'Vincent and the Doctor' uses his powers for good though; he so often can't save anyone at all, but at least on this occasion, he showed a man just how loved he was. Bill Nighy's beautiful speech about how van Gogh turned his pain into exuberant art is one that's sure to move you, just ever so slightly at least; he may have suffered, but he was truly adored and appreciated. The final twist that the Doctor and Amy couldn't save him, was one that broke hearts though. It was such a wonderful moment to see van Gogh so ecstatic, but the comedown was that he still died; it was one that moved Amy to tears. "The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things," the Doctor said. "The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa the bad things don't always spoil the good things or make them unimportant. And we definitely added to his pile of good things." It was another touching moment, and one that completed the episode. It was a story that was poignant, lovely and philosophical; Curtis earned his audience's tears by the end.
