Doctor Who: 5 Types Of Male Companions (And Where Danny Pink Might Fit)

2. Military

This is a less commonly seen type, but it is all the more remarkable because it serves as a reminder that the Doctor's peace-loving ways and methods are what sets him apart from an ordinary hero. The military types are excellent with loyalty and reliability most of the time, however, and the Doctor appreciates them because he knows he can trust them €“ up to a point. The Doctor's abhorrence of violence and his companions' willingness to use do cause some friction from time to time, and there have been full-out confrontations over which method to use, force vs. peace. It usually takes some time for the Doctor and a military type to warm up to each other, but once they do, they usually become good friends. The best example of this type of companion is Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (I know there's some debate as to whether or not he counts as a companion, but for the purpose of this article, he does). The Brigadier was skeptical of the Doctor's wild claims and for a long time insisted on continuing to do things his way. Likewise, the Doctor was exasperated at meeting who he thought was another brainless military man...but the Brigadier did have a brain, and he knew how to use it, too. He was wise enough to recognize that the Doctor did have some valid points and it wouldn't really hurt anything to try the Doctor's methods at least once. In his turn, the Doctor found that the Brigadier was a man of integrity and honour and was worthy of respect. These two men with vastly different backgrounds and opinions managed to find common ground and a way to be friends, which can be considered a parallel to how people from all over the world come together over Doctor Who and bond over that when they might not have anything else in common. Being a teacher, I'm really not sure how much of a connection Danny will have with the military, so I don't think he'll be involved in this category very much.
