Doctor Who: 5 Types Of Male Companions (And Where Danny Pink Might Fit)

1. Action Hero

This has been the most prevalent type of male companion to date, and it is also the oldest in the show. Ian, although he fit the brain type as well, was intended to be a sort of action hero, strong enough to physically defend the Doctor, Susan, and Barbara if the situation required it. Virtually every male companion after Ian followed the similar pattern of youth and strength to contrast with the Doctor's age and wisdom. This setup made sense back in the days when an older Doctor was the norm. Even with the younger Doctors of the modern era, the action hero companion has found a home. We've had Captain Jack Harkness, who, being immortal, is basically your ultimate action hero. Even Mickey and Rory, who started as bumblers, became strong and confident heroes, equal to the Doctor in their own right. Of all the companion types, I could easily see Danny fitting into this category. It's the most common type for the male companion, and with an older Doctor back in the TARDIS, it would make sense to have a younger male companion on board to provide any physical protection the Doctor and Clara might need. (Disclaimer: this is not saying that the Doctor and Clara can't take care of themselves.) What will be most interesting to see is how Danny puts his own spin on this category €“ or any category he finds himself. Those are my thoughts, anyway. What are yours?
