Doctor Who: 50 Greatest Dalek Moments

2. 'I Am Not A Dalek!' - Asylum Of The Daleks

A message of this article is that the true horror of the Daleks is not how different they are from us but how similar they are. As species, the Daleks and humanity seem to go hand in hand €“- and the Daleks know that better than anyone. Which is why they often try to 'recruit' us... Asylum of the Daleks contains the most shocking and horrible realisation of a human being becoming a Dalek when Oswin, the quirky genius souffle girl waiting to be rescued by the Doctor, is revealed to be Dalek. Resisting the conversion, she has locked herself up in her head to avoid the terrible reality. It gets worse however when the terrified Oswin begins to give in to her Dalek side, almost exterminating the Doctor. The scene is a disturbing one not only for the discovery of a horrible fate happening to a loveable character but also due to seeing the Oswin Dalek from the outside, with its human voice patterns. There is something so utterly wrong about a Dalek sobbing. The threat of becoming a Dalek is far more chilling a prospect than simply being killed by one. I'd take exterminate any day.

1. The Survivors Of The Time War - Dalek

2 NineDalekConfrontationAlthough the Daleks have produced rels and rels of terrifying, thrilling, surprisingly funny moment across fifty years of time and space, the heart of what makes them so interesting is surely their eternal conflict with the Doctor. While he stands for courage and kindness and individuality, the Daleks are the embodiment of cunning and hatred and uniformity. They are exact opposites which is why they detest each other so much. Yet they also have worrying similarities. And this is no better demonstrated than in the confrontation between the Doctor and the Dalek in Van Statten's vault. The two sole survivors of the Time War. With their usual roles reversed, the Dalek is emotional and despondent at the demise of his species, while the Doctor is full of rage and fear. It is the Dalek, realising the magnitude of being the last of his species, that reaches out for some company in his greatest enemy. 'We are the same,' it says. The Doctor is at first angered at this but then seems to agree. 'I know what you deserve,' he says. 'Exterminate!' Before, pulling a lever that electrocutes the Dalek. It's a brutal move by the Doctor, played to perfection by the ever-brilliant Christopher Eccleston, but exhibits the relationship between the Doctor and his greatest enemy perhaps better than any other moment. The Daleks represent the darker side of the Doctor, and by extension us, and he has to defeat them to prove that he, and we, are better than the Daleks. With such a great wealth of material being produced around them for so long - from the first shot of their sink plunger all the way to battling the Doctor at his most recent regeneration €“ it can be sure that the Doctor will not be rid of his greatest foes any time soon. Something the last fifty years have shown us is that the Daleks will never be exterminated. HUMAN READERS. YOUR THOUGHTS ARE REQUIRED. DO YOU AGREE WITH THESE EXAMPLES OF DALEK SUPREMACY? IF YOU DO NOT THEN LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS BELOW TO IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS AN ENEMY OF THE DALEKS!
