Doctor Who: 6 Greatest In-Jokes On The Show

4. Tony Ainley As The Master Or Nate Noyily As Sam Rhette

Kicking off a string of in-jokes regarding names is this clever bit of wordplay from the Classic Who era. During Tony Ainley's time as the Master, the rival renegade Time Lord was especially fond of anagrams, and other basic word cryptology to hide his identity (something the Professor Yana name picked up on incidentally). Riffing on this, according to TARDIS Data Core, Mr. Ainley's name was sometimes also altered in credits or promotional material. This served as both a clever homage and protected important plot developments, as at the time of his reintroduction he was not initially revealed as the Master. They took this even a step further in The King's Demons crediting him as James Stoker, an anagram for "Master's Joke".
