Doctor Who: 8 Aspects Of Peter Capaldi's Costume Analysed

1. The Overall Look

As many guessed, it's not nearly as bombastic as Matt Smith's '70s geography teacher chic, but it's not the return to frilly shirts and floor length coats that it could have been. It's a very understated, timeless look, and it's one that will no doubt allow Capaldi to be theatrical in his acting and not in his costume, rather like Christopher Eccleston claimed he'd like his Ninth Doctor to be. The dark navy is also very prominent; the Twelfth Doctor is continuing with the dark hues of the Eleventh, but isn't without colour completely. Navy is an extremely traditional choice, without being old-fashioned, and it accentuates the contrasts of the red and white. Matching it with the dark trousers and the black shoes is conventional enough, and nothing stands out in the outfit; this might not be a Doctor popular at fancy dress parties, but he's certainly bringing the character back down to Earth with a practical, yet smart and authoritative look. And who's to say that the look won't evolve? Maybe the Twelfth Doctor will lighten up and wear a brighter jacket; maybe he'll don a scarf every now and then, wear a tie, or swap the cardi for a jumper Clara knits him for Christmas. What do you think of the Twelfth Doctor's outfit though? Is it good to tone the look down, or is it not ostentatious enough for a Time Lord? Comment below!
