Doctor Who: 8 Aspects Of Peter Capaldi's Costume Analysed

2. The Coat

He had to have a coat or a jacket: we knew that much. Eleven's rejuvenated tweed jacket sales, Ten looked every inch the lonely god in his long suede overcoat, and Nine's leather jacket was as all-purposes as he was. Even Colin Baker had a coat; Twelve couldn't not have one. It's a Crombie coat, presumably single-vented at the back, and it's a good shade of blue; it doesn't look too flashy, but it's classy, and Capaldi's opted for the single-breasted, which perhaps makes him look younger and sleeker than a double-breasted one would. The red lining may be metaphorical for the rage within a Time Lord, but otherwise it looks somewhat vampirical; could this be a sign of Twelve's dark side? It's not quite as long as Eleven's knee-length frock coat - again, this is a sensibly-dressing incarnation - but it's long enough to resonate with the classic, long Doctor coats of the past. It suggests adventure, authority and again, it looks really warm. Maybe this is a Doctor who feels the chill.
