2. The Journey Home
The Doctor has done it, Gallifrey is saved. Yet what does this really mean? We sometimes forget that he Time Lords are not good guys. In the "Night of the Doctor" prologue, it is stated quite clearly that the rest of the universe sees little difference between the Time Lords and the Daleks. Cass, a potential companion if we ever saw one, would rather die than consort with a Time Lord. So even if the Doctor can bring back his people should he? What if he's made a mistake and he's allowed his own emotions to cloud his judgment? What if bringing back Gallifrey simply restarts the Time War? What if he's actually betrayed the universe? After watching this episode I suddenly realized why the Doctor hangs around Earth so much. It reminds him of home the same violence, arrogance, greed and pettiness. But Earth is home with hope it hasn't stagnated yet, hasn't lost its potential. Bringing back Gallifrey has to have consequences and I hope they are not shunted aside but fully explored. It's a fascinating direction for the show to take, but hopefully not a superficial one.
