They mentioned that it would change the course of the show forever, but it wasn't quite the dark path we expected. The Doctor is no longer running away from Gallifrey. He's running towards it. He knows it's out there, and he knows that one day he'll find it. But as he said in the closing moments, he'll go home "the long way round". The show has many years of adventure to come, but at least now we know that in the end, he really does retire happily.
