Doctor Who Flatline: 5 Questions On The Future Of Clara And The Doctor

1. Clara Is Going To Die

It would be a tragic end to such a brilliant companion, but between Danny Pink alluding her travels with the Doctor as a metaphor for war and the final revelation at the end of Flatline, this may be exactly where Clara is going. At the center of this darker series eight, is the theme of death. We still aren't any closer to finding out exactly what Missy and the Promised Land are all about but people keep dying and they all seem to be ending up in her care. This week Doctor Who ended with Missy looked on an image of Clara and called her 'my Clara'. What's more, Missy had chosen well. Is Missy the woman who gave Clara the Doctor's phone number back in The Bells Of St John? Probably. But it would appear it was to lead her to a point in the very near future. Will Clara die and end up in The Promised Land too? If Missy is collecting lost souls, Clara could be at the top of her list, which means she isn't long for this world. What if Clara agonises over whether to chose the Doctor or Danny and chooses too late? The illusion that Orson might be her her great grand daughter in Listen might be a red herring. Just because he was Danny's descendant, that doesn't mean he is hers too. As great as the dynamic between Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi is - arguably far better than what she had with Matt Smith - there is a sense that Doctor Who couldn't top the drama we've seen in series eight. If Clara really is going - as the tabloids suggest - then maybe we've seen the end game of her journey unfolding over the last few weeks. What is so great is that there are many possibilities, all of them plausible, so we are sure to be kept on our toes to the very end!
