Doctor Who: Patrick Troughton's 10 Best Bits

8. 'The Macra Terror'

Doctor Who The Macra Terror We come now to 'The Macra Terror'. As well as adding Patrick Troughton's lovely Beatleesque face into the title sequence which proves itself an ideal psychedelic accompaniment to that great Radiophonic Workshop theme tune, it's the first outing for those hulking great crab beasties hiding under the motorway in 'Gridlock'. Watch this and you'll possibly be left weeping at how stupid they've become by the time the Tenth Doctor rolls up in New New York. Here they're at least a bit more switched on. It's quickly established that they feed on the unclean gases not suitable for the lungs of the human colonists they share their planet with. How lovely to find some ecologically aware space crustaceans, you might think. But hold that thought. At first glance the place seems a bit like a galactic holiday camp. Put any thoughts of Butlins out of your mind and quick! Everyone here's been hypnotised by the naughty pincer-wavers into mining for those nasty gases that bring about a nasty case of death. And before the Doctor can yell 'hi-de-hi, campers!' Ben is under their seafoody spell. Thankfully everything turns out alright in the end but, as a quick FYI, it might put you off crabsticks.
