Doctor Who: Ranking Debut Doctor Stories From Worst To Best

9. The Christmas Invasion - The Tenth Doctor

Arthur Dent reference or not, I wasn€™t impressed. Ok so the story isn€™t actually that bad. But where the heck is The Doctor? It features robotic Santas destroying a peaceful market by firing fireball/lazers out of tubas. Filling time with killer Christmas trees and zombie-fied kids about to commit suicide might be the very definition of Christmas, but this is the debut of a new Doctor? We€™d all cried and crumpled after Christopher Eccleston€™s short but sweet stint in the TARDIS came to an end, and to have David Tennant€™s first story being a whole lot of waiting and uncertainty just feels agonising. The big crescendo moment however is rather fantastic, with The Tenth Doctor quoting the Lion King, and dissolving the alien invasion within about 40 seconds before lamenting the decline in blood control technology. The sword fight is also brilliant, the first swordfight the Doctor€™s been in since The Kings Demons (you€™re welcome) was nice to see, and that whole €œone chance€ thing was broody and sexy (I guess). It€™s a below average RTD episode that didn€™t feature enough Timelord for my liking.
