Doctor Who: Ranking Debut Doctor Stories From Worst To Best

10. The Twin Dilemma - The Sixth Doctor

Let me say this straight away. I LOVE The Sixth Doctor. He€™s my third favourite Doctor (behind Matt Smith and Tom Baker). But even his most unwavering defender will have trouble defending The Twin Dilemma. Anthony Stevens' only contribution into The Doctors adventures is appalling in a number of ways. Despite the general negative fan reaction towards The Doctor STRANGLING HIS COMPANION BECAUSE HE THOUGHT SHE WAS A SPY, I€™ve always thought it set up Colin Baker's Doctor quite well, allowing him to mellow through his travels with Peri until she gets her head shaved and marries Brian Blessed (long story). The Doctor's post-regeneration mental breakdown means his character is more bizarre than it ever has or will be in this story. The story itself is a barrelload of absolute tosh and piffle about the kidnap and subsequent tracking down of two twins who are very good at maths, although they didn€™t have a badge to prove it. It€™s just that it€™s so poorly performed by the Twins, that it deflates the entire story, which isn€™t very good at all anyway. Infact I€™d say that the only thing that saves it is Colin Bakers eccentric and brilliant performance as The Doctor. The main antagonist, and the plot, are both quite frankly rubbish. But still better than Time and the Rani. The absolute nail in the coffin however was that it came directly after quite possibly the greatest Doctor Who story of all time, The Caves of Androzani.
