Doctor Who: Ranking Debut Doctor Stories From Worst To Best
3. Power Of The Daleks - The Second Doctor
This is a tricky one. The great tragedy about the wonderful Patrick Troughton is that hardly any of his stories visually exist in full. To count at the time of writing, there are 7 complete stories, with several stories having gaps filled by wonderfully creative animators, the count rises to 12 (though three of the five animated are currently unreleased). Power of the Daleks is one of the many that has been stripped of the majority of it visuals, and currently has exactly none of its Six episodes available. However, there are reconstructions and a few narrated audio versions available, so its not completely lost. The first post-regeneration story features a bizarre, recorder playing Patrick Troughton, and a shed load of Daleks. The Doctor sees a murder, and is determined to discover the caused before eventually discovering Daleks, much to his chagrin. The Daleks are sneakier than ever, as they manage to convince scientists on the planet Vulcan, to help rebuild them before claiming I am your servant!, which clearly inspired the 2010 Dalek episode Victory of the Daleks. The (key word) eccentricities of the renewed Doctor range from sleeping after hes had enough, to playing Gilbert and Sullivan on his recorder. This Doctor slowly faded into the recognizably Doctorish Doctor template we see in Tomb of the Cybermen, but this jokerish cosmic hobo is an interesting take on the Doctor. This David Whitaker written tale of rebellion and death is a sadly missing, and oft remembered classic, that introduced the wonderful Second Doctor to our screens, changing Doctor Who forever.
