Doctor Who Series 8: 10 Reasons The Valeyard Is The Perfect Villain

9. It Would Explain The Darker Doctor

From hints we've seen for ourselves and that Moffat has generously dropped, it's pretty apparent that the Twelfth Doctor is going to be a darker incarnation than we've seen in awhile. The fire in his eyes in The Day of the Doctor indicated that this is/will be a man not to be trifled with, someone who means business and is quite serious about it, and the recent teaser trailer cast the new Doctor in a more ominous light. The sparking TARDIS console, the shadows covering the Doctor's face--all of this points to a darker tone for the upcoming series. It might seem like a jarring transition after Eleven's buoyant attitude, but what if there was a more sinister reason behind the personality shift? What if the new Doctor is darker because the Valeyard is fighting for control? There could be some pretty spectacular stories that have the Valeyard fighting to control the Doctor by influencing his actions so subtly that not even the Doctor is aware of what is happening, building up to a dramatic climax of the Doctor and the Valeyard dueling for control of the TARDIS. Of course, the Twelfth Doctor's dark side might not necessarily be a result of the Valeyard's interference, but it would be an explanation for any particularly unusually violent or dark behaviors he starts to exhibit.
