Doctor Who: 10 Best Episodes Of The Decade

8. Vincent And The Doctor (2010)

Doctor Who The End of Time
BBC

Written by the famous Richard Curtis (best known for Love Actually and Blackadder), ‘Vincent and the Doctor’ has plenty of emotional heft, particularly during the last ten minutes.

Though there is plenty of humour throughout, the episode is not afraid to address the dark side of Vincent van Gogh in regard to his struggles with depression and bipolar disorder.

The set designs and the costumes elevate the episode still further. Despite being filmed predominately in Croatia, the surrounding environment feels just like late-nineteenth century Paris.

The monster unfortunately lets the episode down slightly. As well as some outdated CGI, the moments with the monster feel like an inconvenience compared with the conversations between The Doctor, Amy, and Vincent.

Still, the script and the performances more than make up for it. Indeed, based on the quality of ‘Vincent and the Doctor’, fans of the show would certainly be thrilled if Curtis were to write another episode for Doctor Who.
