Doctor Who - 10 Best Moments Of The Third Doctor
10. Reverse The Polarity Of The Neutron Flow!
Give the Doctor a catchphrase and he will run with it. Over the years we have had phrases such as Allons-y from the Tenth, "Geronimo," from the Eleventh and Would you like a jelly baby, from the Fourth Doctor. It was the Third Doctor that had one of the most original and scientifically sounding catchphrases in the series. Though he only used it on screen twice (The Sun Devils, The Five Doctors), the Third Doctor made reverse the polarity of the neutron flow something that would be heard screamed at the top of the lungs of children imitating the Doctor all across England. The phrase appears to be absolute gibberish, but it sounded like decent enough technobabble to make it appear to be an actual technical phrase and solution to more complicated technological problems. It is rumored that Jon Pertwee liked the sound of it so much that he requested the writer Terrance Dicks have the Doctor use it more often. The phrase would later be amended and used by other future Doctors. The Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, changed the phrase to reverse the linearity of the proton flow. Even the Eleventh Doctor's doppelganger would make reference to the phrase when he uttered, reverse the jelly baby of the neutron flow in the episode The Almost People.
