Doctor Who: 10 Best Multi-Part Stories In Nu Who

6. The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit

Often ranked as one of the best examples of Doctor Who’s signature “base-under-siege” style of storytelling, The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit are two of the stand out episodes of Season 2. Taking place in a asteroid base currently being held in orbit around a black hole (an intriguing set-up so effective it will appear on this list again!) this episode introduces us to The Ood, the spaghetti-mouthed slave race who would go on to appear frequently throughout the remainder of the Tennant era.

The story is aided not only by stellar performances from David Tennant and Billie Piper, both firmly established and comfortable in their roles by this point, but by a well-rounded cast of supporting characters who are all likeable and, more importantly, all feel like real people – something that not every episode of this show can say.

The show builds and sustains a sense of tension as the stakes steadily rise and for once does not back down on its promise; giving us actual Satan as the villain, played with sinister delight by classic-Who alum Gabriel Woolf.
