Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Episodes

7. Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead

Doctor Who Midnight

Moffat is back again with an incredible two-part story from the fourth series of Doctor Who.

A little girl whose apparent imaginary library on another world turns out to be real? Check. Terrifying monsters whose terror comes from nearly every child’s irrational fear of the dark? Check. A mysterious woman who meets The Doctor out of order in time and knows more about him than he her?

Check mate.

This episode gathers the best ideas for a Who story and blends them to create something exciting, new and engaging, with a dash of mystery lingering throughout.

The Vashta Nerada are a deliciously creepy villain with a disturbing, yet memorable catch phrase (“Hey, who turned out the lights!”) and remain a sinister presence throughout.

Forest of the Dead expanded on an already terrific first part with an existential-themed story for Donna, who finds herself living another alternate reality with a husband and kids who may not even exist.

Alex Kingston as the enigmatic River Song marks the introduction of a solid secondary character, and Moffat’s delight in playing with time travel work wonders here, with an emotional wrap up that hints for future adventures to come.

This story has it all, from terrifying monsters, to emotional gut punches and all the thrills in between – stay out of the shadows!
