Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Performances From Guest Stars

9. Suranne Jones As Idris - The Doctor’s Wife (Series 6, Episode 4)

Doctor Who The Waters of Mars Adelaide Brooke
BBC

In this creatively original episode, the Eleventh Doctor and companions Amy and Rory travel to another universe, where they come across a sinister scheme by an alien who has killed many Time Lords and intends to consume the TARDIS.

Suranne Jones plays Idris, who becomes the female embodiment of The Doctor’s longest companion – his beloved TARDIS. The screenplay has a brilliant premise and fixes a long running issue of The Doctor never materialising where he intended to go, only for his TARDIS to state that she always took him where he was needed most.

Jones gives a dynamic, layered performance as The Doctor’s most pivotal accomplice, brimming with energy and sharing great chemistry with Matt Smith. They bounce off each other well, exchanging enlightening conversations and developing their very special relationship.

The episode is full of whimsical fun, which is balanced out with well-placed darkness and drama. Jones effortlessly leans between the two tones and delivers on a poignant departure for her character. For such an intriguing part, Suranne makes it her own and she definitely had a ball with it!
