Doctor Who: 10 Best NuWho Performances From Guest Stars
2. Toby Curran As Vincent Van Gough - Vincent And The Doctor (Series 5, Episode 10)
In another beloved episode amongst fans, The Doctor and Amy travel back in time to meet Vincent van Gough and investigate a strange creature which appeared in one of his paintings at the Musée d'Orsay museum.
This story is full of heart and compassion, boldly exploring the darker side of Vincent with his suffering of depression and the lead up to him eventually taking his own life. The monster of the week in the Krafayis is literally a metaphor for depression, with only Vincent being able to see the creature, just like how only those who suffer from mental health issues can truly understand what they themselves are going through.
Toby Curran is the shining star, perfectly capturing the genius of the artist, as well as the torment which plagued his life. He fully embraces both the light and dark elements, really feeling like a tangible person with good and bad qualities and not just a caricature of the famous historical figure.
From describing the wonder of the world through his eyes, to suffering the abuse of the village people and his own mind, Curran simply is Vincent van Gough and who could forget the beautiful catharsis of giving him the chance to see how his art will be remembered for future generations?
