Doctor Who: 10 Biggest Mistakes Of The Chris Chibnall Era

7. Alienating Casual Viewers With Deep Lore

One of the great strengths of Doctor Who used to be that anyone, even channel-hoppers, could tune in to any random episode of the show, and have it make full sense, and tell a complete story.

The Chibnall era is different however. In Series 12 onwards, he became so obsessed with lore and continuity that many of his episodes just flat-out didn't make sense unless you'd seen a large chunk of either the classic or modern series.

A perfect example of this was The Power of the Doctor, which contained so many references and callbacks that unless you had feverishly studied the end of Series 12 and the classic series, it could be an incoherent watch.

The return of the Lone Cyberman and the CyberMasters also left casual viewers in the dust, as they had not been mentioned or seen in the programme for well over two years.
