Doctor Who has never shied away from shocking cliffhangers and plot twists. Since its return in 2005 the series has been keeping fans on the edge of their seats for years with unforeseen reveals and shocking (sometimes controversial) cliffhangers and plot twists.

While there have been some plot twists that missed the mark completely (here's looking at you, The Timeless Children),most twists and cliffhangers kept fans of the show intrigued and wanting more. Whether it’s a surprise return of a beloved character or villain, one line that changes the entire history of the show, or an unexpected reveal, Doctor Who has always been an expert in creating shocking swerves that no one saw coming.

It's the twists that have kept fans coming back for so long. For a show as complex and exciting as Doctor Who, complete with time and space travel, it’s no surprise that the sci-fi series has become a master at creating such twists to maintain interest and generate buzz.

Although almost every episode has some sort of surprise, it’s the following ten shocking developments that had us screaming at our TV sets.

10. The Eleventh Doctor Is Killed

The premiere for the sixth season started off with a bang... literally.

In the first ten minutes of the episode, we see The Eleventh Doctor killed by a mysterious astronaut figure that has risen from Lake Silencio, Utah. It’s fair to say many fans were left shocked and confused by this, as there is no way that The Doctor can actually die, right?

It’s not until a few minutes later that the episode gives us another big twist that The Doctor is back, except it is a younger version of himself who has no idea who, what or why he was sent an invitation to Utah.

River, Amy and Rory spend the remainder of the season keeping his death a secret from The Doctor as they were afraid of what he might do if he found out, since it’s been said to be a fixed point in time.

The twist at the beginning of the season left fans on the edge of their seats as the season went on, as many wondered how The Doctor was going to cheat death.
