It's a widely known fact that the Great Time War is (or was) "time locked"; it's an event in history that cannot be breached through time travel. In short, no one can go in or out of it. Got that? While it was never clear why and how the Time War got time locked, it has prevented Time Lords from escaping their doom through time travel. But in the last days of the war, before their inevitable death, they found a loophole. €œLoophole€ being a word used loosely.

Apparently, the four-beat sound of drums in the Master'€™s head was actually a signal sent to the past by the time locked Time Lords (try saying that when you're drunk) so that they could communicate with the Master of the present. Wait... what? But there's more. To let the Master release them from the time lock, they sent a small Galifreyan stone from their timeline to the Master€™s which was ultimately used as a power source to breach the time lock. So in trying to find a way to make time travel possible, they used time travel? Terrible execution for such a momentous event.
