Doctor Who: 10 Characteristics Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Should Have

2. Reckless

Satan Pit In conjunction with the idea of an icier Doctor, I also want to seem him composed, decisive, and ready to make more bad choices. You know, like repelling into a hole you may never escape. In a story Hide from the most recent series the Doctor utters, "I am the Doctor and I am afraid." I gather that this is supposed to mark a new low point in the Doctor's life; he has been shaken more than ever before. Yet, this is undermined by the Eleventh Doctor's run overall. He was not only emotional, but highly erratic, jumping from ire to bliss to crushing depression. The intensity of recent Doctor Who was at times, incredible. We need moments where the Doctor is lost, scared, confused...but that is what these need to be moments. Where Matt Smith's performance in some ways hinged on being unpredictable, Peter Capaldi's Doctor could definitely benefit from seeming as though he is got it all together. But it would be lazy to point out that the Twelfth Doctor should simply be more confident, there are multiple ways to display and react to confidence. And so, more specifically, I want to see a Twelfth Doctor who is so concerned with appearing confident, that he is willing to throw something away rather than let a weakness be exploited. He is ready to go out on a whim, to gamble with his life and the lives of those he cares about, with a chilling ease. Some of the best moments of Doctor Who happen when the Doctor makes a stupid and dangerous choice. Not only because of anticipation to see how our heroes make it out of this one, but because they remind us that the universe comes first.
