Doctor Who: 10 Choices For The Next Showrunner

9. Mark Gatiss

Why He Should: Gatiss and Moffat are the only two writers currently writing for Doctor Who who were around for the first season of the show€™s revamp. A self-proclaimed massive Whovian, Gatiss has written several episodes over the show€™s eight series run, including the wonderfully realised TV movie An Adventure in Space and Time, which aired as part of the show€™s 50th anniversary celebrations last year. He also co-showruns Sherlock with Moffat, so it would make sense that Moffat would want to hand the show over to a friend, and Gatiss€™ extensive experience writing for the show would instill some confidence in his showrunning ability. Why He Shouldn€™t: For as much as Gatiss has written for Doctor Who, he has yet to churn out an objectively €œgreat€ episode. If Series 8's Robot of Sherwood is an indication of anything, it€™s that Gatiss prefers pulpy storytelling with an emphasis on one-liners and gags, rather than telling stories of any real substance. Although his writing for both Doctor Who and Sherlock has been consistently solid, Gatiss just doesn€™t seem to have the writing chops to sketch out an entire season-long arc and produce multiple quality episodes that this coveted showrunner role would demand of him. With that being said, keep on acting Mark! Game of Thrones is made ten times better with your presence.
