Doctor Who: 10 Choices For The Next Showrunner

8. Jamie Mathieson

Why He Should: Mathieson was easily the best new writer that Moffat brought onto the show for Series 8. Both of his offerings, that's Mummy on the Orient Express and Flatline, were among its highlights. Flatline showed that he could generate original ideas and flesh them out satisfyingly, while Mummy was a display of his ability to put a fresh twist on a classic tale (both of which are skills necessary for a good showrunner at the helm of a beast like Doctor Who). Also helping his case is the fact that Mathieson has no prior involvement with the show. His selection would therefore be the breath of fresh air that Whovians have been gasping for. Why He Shouldn€™t: Simply put, showrunning is a very difficult job. Mathieson has no prior experience with the role, and doesn€™t even have extensive experience writing for television (his previous credits include a handful of episodes of Being Human... and that€™s just about it). Going forward, Mathieson is probably best utilised in the same role Moffat was prior to Series 5, as a one-off writer to keep things fresh. Then, after the next showrunner, who knows?
