Doctor Who: 10 Clever Moments Of Foreshadowing You Probably Missed

1. He Will Knock Four Times

The Tenth Doctor had quite a lot to worry about during his final few adventures: Cybermen in Victorian London, ravenous armoured stingrays patrolling a barren desert, deadly drops of water, and of course... somebody banging on a door.

Indeed, the end of Ten's life was prophesised to occur when an unknown individual knocks four times - a prophecy that eventually came true when lovable companion Wilfred Mott quadruple-tapped on the glass of a radiation booth.

It's one of the best twist moments in the show's history, and just to make the payoff even better, the whole "four knocks" thing was actually foreshadowed in an episode from over a year earlier - Series 4's chilling horror classic, Midnight.

Here, the Doctor does battle with a mysterious, powerful creature that repeats everything it hears - including random sounds. At one point, the Doctor bangs on the door to try and get this creature's attention, and sure enough, it copies him, perfectly matching the rhythm and number of his knocks.

And how many knocks is that? You guessed it: four.

Showrunner Russell T Davies would've undoubtedly been looking ahead to the Tenth Doctor's exit while scripting Midnight, and it's hard to believe that such a specific moment was anything other than a cheekily-placed piece of foreshadowing. Even the BBC's official subtitles call attention to this one!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
