Doctor Who: 10 Controversial Moments From The Revived Series
8. Promiscuous Pond
2009 was generally an exciting year to be a Doctor Who fan. While the output of the Time Lord's adventures on our screens was somewhat limited (owing to the show's glorified gap year in which it churned out only a handful of hour long seasonal 'specials'), there were still plenty of behind the scenes developments to keep us occupied as production on Matt Smith's first series at the helm of the TARDIS officially got underway in Cardiff, signalling the start of the show's shining new era. When the initial foray of filming pictures began to surface, though, it wasn't the fact that they featured the first glimpse of our next Doctor alongside his coveted new companion, Karen Gillan, that got people talking, but rather the issue that the said companion was seen to be sporting a multitide of mini skirts, an attire which was promptly deemed as inappropriate for the confines of a Saturday night family teatime drama - months before the character was due to make her official on screen debut. There was a narrative reason behind her choice of wardrobe, though. When the Eleventh Doctor's first episode, The Eleventh Hour, aired just less than a year later, Steven Moffat wasted no time in establishing the character of Amy Pond as one of the Doctor's somewhat more 'riskay' relations as she was introduced with an implied promiscuity, layered in underlying glimmers of insecurity, owing to the fact that she had previously met her raggedy man as a young child and ended up waiting over a decade for him to return. What's more, Amy was working as a kiss-o-gram when the Doctor first met her as an adult so the fact she was donning a policewoman outfit for the majority of her first adventure was a way of staying true to this, whilst serving as a suggestion of the character's identity issues which would play a big part in her overriding arc. Steven Moffat has affirmed that Amy Pond always dressed as Amy Pond would dress (which is fair enough, right?) and her alter ego herself, Karen Gillan, has also previously praised the plethora of dresses for ultimately staying true to her character's personality. In addition, it was no doubt a defining factor in Karen being chosen as the sexiest Doctor Who companion of all time, an accolade she no doubt holds closer to heart than her 2012 National Television Award for Best Actress. Both were voted for by the fans, however one is much more prestigious than the other. Which one, though? You decide.
