Doctor Who: 10 Controversial Moments From The Revived Series
7. Not Enough Doctor Who
Doctor Who fans are notorious for wanting as much of their Time Lord as they can get and it's fair to say that they're never really stuck for choice when it comes to divulging in the universe of TV's most iconic science fiction hero. When he isn't busy saving the world on our screens (thanks for that, by the way!), he's continuing the trend in the ever growing range of Doctor Who tie-in novels, comics and audio adventures so it's no exaggeration that the mythology now stretches far beyond the realms of Saturday night television. Last year, though, the show came under fire when some members of its fandom argued that there just wasn't enough of it to go round. To be fair, 2013 was a particularly important one for Doctor Who. In November the series marked its 50th anniversary and some parts of the show's community were disheartened when, in the initial months of its landmark year, there were no signs to suggest that the Doctor was soon to be celebrating half a century on our screens. At least not in the UK, anyway, whereas fans in other countries - most notably America - were being treated to an array of year long festivities as well as a series of commemorative countdown specials to build anticipation ahead of the show's momentous milestone. Admittedly, the BBC were planning loads of awesome stuff for the Doctor's legion of devotees in the UK - they were just taking their time with it, is all. Fans at home were treated to another stupendous Doctor Who Prom, each of the Doctors got given their own stamp and the TARDIS even materialised in Heathrow airport as a celebration of the franchise's far reaching success both abroad and at home. But there was still a general vibe - particularly in the first half of 2013, at least - that the show should have been given a bigger presence in the build up to the big day. The BBC responded to these concerns by reassuring the fans that they wouldn't be left disappointed by their far reaching festivities, and, ultimately, they weren't. Most of them, anyway. Realistically, though, there was only so much they could've done in the build up to it, anyway. Contrary to popular belief, Doctor Who isn't the centrepiece of the BBC"s mantra - although it it a brand which, quite rightfully, receives more of their undivided attention, and not to mention money, than most. The Doctor's 50th anniversary was celebrated in spectacular style in the end but for some, it still wasn't enough. Look, everyone wants every last morsel of Doctor Who they can get their mitts on, but something tells us the BBC won't be launching a channel solely dedicated to endless repeats of his adventures any time soon. Looks like the DVDs will just have to do for now.
