Doctor Who: 10 Defining Moments In River Song's Timeline
8. Raising Mum And Dad
As previously mentioned, Melody Pond was conceived on the TARDIS whilst it was in motion through the time vortex and as such she was born with certain Time Lord tendencies including the ability to regenerate. Viewers weren't accustomed to that rather useful fact when she initially lit up our screens in a burst of explosive energy, though, which made the matter all the more confusing. So Melody Pond had escaped the confines of her astronaut suit which meant she was now basically on the run from Kovarian and the Silence who still needed her to partake in their evil bidding. It's lucky, then, that her post-regenerative self somehow ended up in Leadworth where she found the safety of her own parents, Amy and Rory. Over the years she grew up alongside them and she was even responsible for bringing the love birds together in their teen years which was a particularly important development seeing as her eventful conception depended on it. Just how she knew she had to do all of this remains unclear, though. Perhaps it was all just a coincidence but as 'Mels' she was certainly aware of who she actually was and she seemed to know that Amy and Rory were her biological parents, too. She became obsessed with the Doctor growing up, after Amy's initial encounter with him as a child, and it didn't take long for her murderous mission to kick into action when she finally encountered the Time Lord and ordered him to take her to 1938s Berlin to kill Hitler. Because where else would a psychopathic killer use a time machine to go? Once again her attempt to kill the Doctor was thwarted when she herself got shot by a stray bullet and this is when her true identity was finally revealed to her parents. Suffice to say, they found the realisation that their best childhood friend was actually their kidnapped daughter (not to mention the fact that they had actually named their daughter after their friend, which basically means she was named after herself - are you still with us?) somewhat difficult to take in. Did anybody else find that day just a little bit difficult?
