Doctor Who: 10 Defining Moments In River Song's Timeline

7. River Is Born

After Mels had been shot she began to regenerate once more and this time she transformed into the very incarnation that fans know and love (and the person Amy and Rory had already met on countless occasions... timey-wimey!) as River Song. See, it's all suddenly starting to make a little more sense, isn't it? She still wasn't River Song just yet, though. She may have changed her face but her purpose remained the same and she was still determined to reach her goal of murdering the Doctor once and for all. It looked like she had finally managed to do it after kissing him with poisonous lipstick but her attempt to kill him backfired when it actually made her realise the error of her ways and fall unequivocally in love with him instead. It wasn't that simple, of course, but that's the general idea. The Doctor's heroic nature, even in his final moments, ultimately inspired Mels to want to become a better person and she was also given an insight into her own future which allowed her to see the sort of hero that she herself would one day become. People depended on the Doctor and that was something Mels had never experienced but she realised that it wasn't too late to change the error of her ways. In a complete change of heart, she sacrificed some of her own regenerations to bring the Doctor back from the dead so the girl who was directly responsible for his untimely demise was now the one who was actually saving him. Kovarian didn't see that one coming, did she? Suffice to say, she was pretty furious when she found out...
