"There was a war. A Time War. The last great Time War. My people fought a race called the Daleks for the sake of all creation, and they lost. They lost. Everyone lost. They're all gone now, my family, my friends, even that sky. Ah, you should have seen it, that old planet. The second sun would rise in the south, the mountains would shine. The leaves on the trees were silver. When they caught the light every morning, they lit the forest on fire."

Forced by Martha Jones to explain where he comes from, this is the description the Doctor comes up with. It's a beautiful speech, one that can really stir the imagination, and it's a huge credit to Russell T Davies' abilities as a writer.

However, it's Tennant's delivery that makes the scene as awesome as it is. He injects each line with a sort of nostalgic wonder, or of emotional struggle when it comes to the war lines. As a result, it's easy to believe that the Doctor is seeing things we can only imagine, and is half talking to Martha and half lost in his own memories. It's a fantastic performance that makes a really good speech even better, and definitely makes for one of the Tenth Doctor's best moments.
