Doctor Who: 10 Defining Traits Of The Fifth Doctor

1. Dedication To The Cause

All of the Doctors share this trait so it isn't really something specific to this incarnation. Combined with all the other traits previously explored, though, it shows that the Fifth Doctor will stop at nothing to ensure the mission is completed, even at the cost of his own life or happiness. The regeneration and his willingness to save Peri from Spectrox poisoning has already been covered, however something that often goes unnoticed by fans is how quickly the Doctor decides to save Peri. Knowing something feels different about his impending regeneration, and that he has the power to prevent it and continue adventuring, he nonetheless saves Peri without a moment of hesitation on his part. The Fifth Doctor shows his dedication to himself, too. Instead of claiming leadership of Gallifrey, he opts to continue his travels (albeit via running away from his responsibility again) and the dedication to his overriding adventurous spirit shows that he will do just about anything to obtain the life he wishes to live. It's a well known fact that the Doctor not only changes his body during a regeneration but his personality, too. These changes are akin to a blind lottery as no one knows really what they will look or act like until they appear. Peter Davison's Doctor had large shoes to fill after the departure of Tom Baker and many would agree that he did an excellent job in filling them. Between his youthful demeanor, willingness to explore and his dedication to his companions, Peter Davison became a fan favourite. All hail the Fifth Doctor!
