Doctor Who: 10 Great Actors Who Were Completely Wasted

6. Michael Sheen (The Doctor's Wife)

A lot of Doctor Who fans don't even know that Michael Sheen has appeared in the show before, and this links in with some of our reasoning for why he feels wasted.

Sheen featured in the 2011 episode The Doctor's Wife as a sentient and malevolent planet called House, and while the character is deliciously sinister and actually rather memorable, it's slightly odd that House sounds nothing like Sheen, and furthermore, the role doesn't play to any of the actor's strengths as a performer who - generally speaking - excels in more light-hearted roles.

Touching on the first part of that problem, we'll say it again: House sounds nothing like Sheen, and that's an issue. The actor's voice has been altered to a ridiculous extent, meaning that the strength of this character is down to some solid post-production work, rather than what Sheen originally did in the booth. It honestly feels like any actor could've played this role, and the end result would've been the same.

Secondly, House is just... evil. And that's it. This lack of depth means that none of Sheen's quirkiness is allowed to shine through, which is almost a crime considering how good his "Sheen-isms" are in stuff like Good Omens and Tron Legacy.

Instead, Sheen was lumped with a monotonous voice-only role, and while House does work well for what he is, the actor could've brought a lot more to the table if he was given something meatier to chew on.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
