The episodes from 2013 were full of references and tributes to Doctor Who's 50 year history. One of the most powerful scenes came from The Rings of Akhaten when the Doctor confronted the Old God and fought him with the strength of his memories and history.

The Doctor has lived longer than anyone else and he is full of tales and memories on which the Old God could gorge itself. The most impressive part, though, was hearing the pain in the Doctor's voice as he recounted the worst of his memories. It was a reminder, in case anyone had forgotten, of exactly how long he has been traveling and everything he has loved and lost along the way.
