Doctor Who: 10 Iconic Sixth Doctor Moments Nobody Will Ever Forget

5. Gallifrey Rant

Another stonking instance of Baker in full flood occurred in the same story, as the Doctor vented an epic amount of frustration at his own people, who had taken him out of time to defend his very existence. The fury of the Sixth was administered with both barrels by the bombastic actor, fuelled in part by the death of Peri (he was on his way to rescue her when the Time Lords snatched him away) and the realisation he was descended from a race of megalomaniacal bureaucrats. "In all my travelling throughout the universe, I have battled against evil, against power-mad conspirators. I should have stayed here! The oldest civilisation: decadent, degenerate, and rotten to the core. Power-mad conspirators, Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen - they're still in the nursery compared to us. Ten million years of absolute power. That's what it takes to be really corrupt!" Pip and Jane Baker's impassioned speech required an excellent performer to make it sing, and they must have been pleased as Panopticon punch that their namesake gave it such welly. Putting to bed once and for all talk about his incarnation lacking the sense of justice that characterised his predecessors, these few lines of dialogue cemented Colin as a true defender of what's right. In his final adventure, it couldn't have come a moment too soon.
