3. The Web Of Fear

doctor who the web of fear The sequel to The Abominable Snowmen, this story has classic written all over it. Not only did it feature the return of the Great Intelligence, but it also marked the debut appearance of one of the most iconic characters in Doctor Who History. Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart. Okay, so he wasn€™t a Brigadier yet. (That would come with his return in the following year€™s Cyberman classic The Invasion, alongside a little known force called Unit) but this was the first seeds of a relationship that would define the Third Doctor (and to a lesser extent, the Fourth). In this story, Professor Travers, a character first seen in The Abominable Snowmen, is forty years older and has awoken one of the Yeti in the London underground. Suddenly the Doctor and his companions are faced with another attempted invasion by the Great Intelligence, this time with a much creepier Yeti lurking through the shadowy and claustrophobic tunnels of the London underground. Only this time, the enemy is seeking to gain control of the Doctor€™s mind. Reading about this episode, is sounds as if there is an air of menace about the entire tale. Not only with the battles in dark tunnels beneath London but also the growing concern that the Great Intelligence has possessed on of the good guys. A great dollop of mystery and distrust, vicious monsters, a malevolent enemy alien force and a memorable introduction for the future Brigadier. I can€™t wait to watch this episode. It€™s just a shame, unless the rumour is true, only the first episode of this six part story remains€
