Doctor Who: 10 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About The TARDIS

7. The TARDIS€™s Console Is Designed For Six Operatives

One of the Doctor's many quirks, perhaps especially evident in his Eleventh incarnation, has been his increasingly frantic dashing around the TARDIS during its operation. Apparently, this has less to do with his eccentricity and is more a consequence of the TARDIS's design, which is meant to be piloted by 6 experienced Time Lords rather than just our single, last Doctor. This does help to conveniently explain all the times the plot relied on the TARDIS landing in a completely different setting from where the Doctor intended (although the Doctor does often operate with pinpoint accuracy, but, hey, it€™s Doctor Who - it wouldn't be fun if everything made perfect sense!). This 6 operative function was fulfilled once in the show€™s history, in Journey's End, with Rose, Martha, Sarah Jane, Mickey Smith, Captain Jack Harness and the Doctor himself. Conversely, in some episodes, the TARDIS is shown to be capable of manipulating her own controls perfectly well. It's perhaps interesting to note that the TARDIS isn€™t just the oft-seen console room, but actually contains a swimming pool, an observatory, a library, a greenhouse and at least 7 squash courts... at least.
