Doctor Who: 10 Moments In NuWho That Made Us Cry

2. Vincent And The Doctor

In this season five episode, Amy and the Doctor meet the famous painter, Vincent Van Gogh. On the surface, the episode is about the Doctor, Amy and Vincent taking on an invisible monster, and the Doctor making sure Vincent paints the picture that led them there.

Under the surface, it is a stunning examination of mental health and doesn’t shy away from portraying Vincent’s depression.

It’s a brutal episode that culminates in the Doctor and Amy taking Vincent to the modern day to see how his work affects people in the future. At the exhibition of his work, Vincent is overwhelmed and hears Dr Black discuss why Vincent’s paintings are so important and influential. After the kind words, Vincent embraces him and utters “thank you,” while sobbing and leaves with the Doctor and Amy.

After they return Vincent to his time and then head back to the gallery, Amy hopes there will be new paintings because she is confident they changed Vincent’s life and gave him reason to live. Instead, she is heartbroken to learn that Vincent was unable to overcome his demons and sadly still committed suicide not long after they took him home.

It's such a hard-hitting moment that speaks so eloquently and so beautifully about mental health and does it in such a respectful and human way.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
