Doctor Who: 10 Moments In NuWho That Made Us Cry

The Husbands of River Song was a wonderfully light, comedic story and was a perfect Christmas Day episode. It featured Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor and River Song. For the most part, River doesn’t recognise the Doctor, having never seen him with this new face. It’s funny to see the two interact while Twelve doesn’t admit who he is. Surprisingly, the whole episode lulls us into a false sense of security.

Ever since the Tenth Doctor met River in the library, we’ve known that their final meeting would be on Darillium at the Singing Towers with the Doctor sporting a new suit and a haircut. It was a moment that had lived in our imaginations for years, and finally seeing it was too much to comprehend. Yet, here he is; the Doctor with his new suit and a haircut. He presents River with her sonic screwdriver and they talk about their love for each other.

Tearfully, River accepts that this is the last time she will see the Doctor before she dies.

Suddenly, that joyful Christmas Day story flips into a dramatic, heartbreaking final meeting for the Doctor and River. Not only was it an ending that made us cry, but it was also one that came from nowhere without warning and left us ugly crying over our Christmas dinner.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
