Doctor Who: 10 (More) Actors Who Could Replace Jenna Coleman

1. Rupert Grint

Rupert Grint Som Private Smith I Into The White Why he should be: As pointed out in the comments, the list of potential actresses to replace Jenna Coleman missed off Emma Watson. However, this list isn€™t going to miss her Harry Potter co-star, Rupert Grint. He€™s often linked with being the next Doctor whenever such lists are passed around and while he doesn€™t necessarily have the gravitas required for that role he€™d be excellent as a companion. He does have previous experience, after all, having played second fiddle to Daniel Radcliffe throughout the Harry Potter franchise. His output since Harry Potter hasn€™t met the same acclaim or even viewership as Radcliffe and Watson€™s recent work so Who could be a great opportunity for him to get back into the limelight and even show more range than he has in the past. He has good comic timing and grew hugely as an actor across the course of those films so he€™d be able to create a good dynamic with Capaldi. Furthermore, he€™s still got a lot of name recognition as a result of being Ron Weasley which could draw even more viewers into Doctor Who and create a flood of fresh blood into the fandom. Speaking of the fandom, like others on this list, Grint has been part of something that has a hugely enthusiastic fan base so he€™ll be able to interact with the Whovians and won€™t be daunted by the amount of attention that would be heaped upon him as a result of being cast. Why he shouldn€™t be: There might be a reason that Grint€™s post-Potter movies haven€™t reached the same audience as Radcliffe and Watson. If you really had to pick, he€™s probably the weakest actor of the three. This could be a bad sign if he€™s up for a role where he€™d have to act opposite someone as talented as Capaldi as there€™s a danger he could wind up becoming part of the background. He€™s also been more used in lighter-hearted roles and there hasn€™t really been the opportunity for him to showcase a darker side, one that could fit into Moffat€™s plans for a dangerous Doctor/Companion relationship. While he could pull it out of the bag, it€™s another mark against him. Casting someone that wouldn€™t fit with the plans of the showrunner wouldn€™t be a wise move for the show. There€™s also the issue that his role in Harry Potter might overshadow his casting as the companion, in much the same way as Colin Morgan as Merlin or Brandon Routh as Superman. It€™s going to be difficult for him to make an impact if people just see Ron Weasley. Who would you like to see as the next companion? Is there anyone we missed from this list? Would you prefer to see a male or a female companion? Share your views in the comments below!
